Dead animals in public areas

We will remove dead animals from public areas like roads, pavements, parks and open spaces.

Dead animals in homes

If you want us to remove a dead animal from your home, please make sure:

  • You place it in a properly securely bag (not a carrier bag)
  • and leave it outside the front of your home, or just inside the front gate

We will not collect the dead animal if these conditions are not met.

The animal will be taken away within 24 hours of it being reported.

We don't help with

  • Bagging up dead animals
  • Collecting dead animals that are not properly bagged up
  • Removing bagged animals from other parts of a home

What happens next?

If the dead animal is a pet, we will scan it to see if it is microchipped. Every pet we collect is scanned and kept for some time in the hope an owner will come forward.

We will keep this information and any pet collars for some time.

Our officers regularly speak with residents about pets that have been collected and do their best to help confirm the identity of the deceased.

It is now the law that all cat and dog owners should have their pets microchipped.

For more information about microchipping your dog or cat, visit the GOV.uk website.

Missing pets

If your pet is missing, you may want to contact us giving a description or image of your pet, their microchip number, and your contact details.

If we have sadly found your pet, then we will be able to provide information on your next available steps.
