Drinking water quality is mainly the responsibility of the water company supplying the water. In Waltham Forest, this is Thames Water

Water companies are regulated by the Drinking Water Inspectorate, which publishes annual reports on drinking water quality across the UK.

In certain rural areas, some properties are not connected to the mains supply and rely on private supplies, generally from a well or borehole. Local councils must monitor these supplies in order to protect public health. Waltham Forest has only one private water supply, at Whipps Cross Hospital.

The quality of river water and groundwater is the responsibility of the Environment Agency.
