Clean Air Act rules and smoke control areas
Smoke Control Area
The whole of Waltham Forest has been designated as a Smoke Control Area under the Clean Air Act 1993. This means that it is an offence to emit smoke from a chimney of a building, or from a furnace or any fixed boiler. It is also an offence to use an 'unauthorised fuel' unless it is in an 'exempt' appliance. The current maximum fine is £1,000 for each offence.
