Trading Standards are required to ensure that all goods sold are correctly weighed and measured in accordance with current legislation. This is done by checking:

  • the accuracy of weighing/measuring equipment regularly
  • checking goods in stock are of the correct weight
  • investigating complaints of short measure

The North East London Metrology Partnership was set up in 2001. It provides a coordinated weights and measures service for the London Boroughs of Waltham Forest, Havering, Redbridge, Barking and Dagenham. The partnership performs the duties of verification and inspection of metrology equipment in businesses in the borough. It also carries out reference tests at premises requiring inspection under the average quantity system.

The partnership was formed to provide the most cost-effective way of fulfilling statutory duties under weights and measures legislation. It ensures a consistent approach to enforcement and advice. For further details of the partnership see London Borough of Havering Trading Standards - weights and measures.
