What is a cooling tower and evaporative condenser?
A cooling tower is a device whose main purpose is to cool water by direct contact between water and a stream of air.
An evaporative condenser is a device which cools a fluid by passing that fluid through a heat exchanger, This is itself cooled by contact with water passing through a stream of air, except for:
- where it contains no water that is exposed to air
- where its water supply is not connected
- where its electrical supply is not connected
The main reason that cooling towers are registered is to identify potential areas that could give rise to spread of infectious disease such as legionella. It will also ensure preventative measures are taken to eliminate the risk of such infections to employees and the public.
