A good starting point to assess your home's energy efficiency is the energy performance certificate. Valid for 10 years, this gives properties a rating from A (most energy efficient) to G (least energy efficient). It gives information about a property’s energy use and typical energy costs, and provides recommendations on how to improve a property’s energy efficiency. An EPC is needed whenever a property is built, sold, or rented. Failure to have a valid EPC can result in a £200 fine.
You can find out if your property has already had an EPC on the Government’s register. If your property does not have an EPC or it has expired, you can find an EPC assessor online. An EPC typically costs between £65 to £120 depending on the size, location and type of building. The energy rating of a home is calculated according to the number of Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) points a property has. Find out which measures carry which amount of points and view the current SAP standard.

This tool can help you identify the best energy upgrade measures for your property. Based on your input on e.g. your property’s age, the type of external walls and heating system, and your preferences, the tool provides tailored recommendations for your home. It will also provides approximate cost and savings of the measures.
