Community Planting Day at Cairo Place

Join us on Saturday 11 November from 12pm to 2pm for a community planting session at Cairo Place to put the finishing touches on the planters, connect, and celebrate this new public space with our neighbours.

To take part, just turn up on the day! The planting session is for all ages, although children must be accompanied by adults. We invite everyone to bring their own gloves and trowel if possible as we have limited supply. 

There will also be an opportunity to talk to Council officers and learn more about the Levelling up Fund projects in Walthamstow.

If you register via Eventbrite you can get a free hot beverage on the day. All volunteers will also receive seasonal plant seeds supplied by local business The Every Space.

At Cairo Road, we have created a space close to Soho Theatre Walthamstow that will be a social community space and an improved cycling and walking route for the area. The scheme also responds to local concerns regarding anti-social behaviour and aspirations for a greener and safer space following local engagement that happened in 2022.

The improvements include:

• new high-quality surfacing, landscaping, and planting to improve biodiversity
• installation of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) 
• improved lighting
• new cycle stands
• public art and projection installations, subject to permission  
• creation of an outdoor area, with lighting and power supply to also support community events
• retention of all six trees

This project is part of upgrades to public spaces along Hoe Street as part of the Government's £17.2m Levelling Up Funding awarded to the Council to deliver projects that unlock Walthamstow’s potential as an exciting, inclusive, safe, and welcoming cultural destination.
