Taking action against illegal garages in Leytonstone

When the Council started the new Safe Streets initiative (piloting currently in South Leytonstone and Chingford) one of the top concerns raised by residents and local councillors was the illegal activity of some garage businesses in the area.

In April 2023 our Neighbourhood, Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) and Parking Officers joined up with the police to crack down on these garages. We visited seven garages in total, and found multiple issues including unauthorised waste storage, illegal parking, and abandoned/dangerous vehicles. We've issued 14 waste related notices, removed five vehicles and given out ten PCNs, plus identified a garage responsible for leaving mopeds obstructing the public highway. All mopeds were removed by the responsible garage and they were warned with regards to future conduct.

These checks will continue on a monthly basis in order to achieve compliance from the garage businesses. We will continue to revisit certain businesses where necessary and look at additional businesses where possible.
