Waltham Forest Council’s annual Community Walking and Cycling Fund is welcoming applications from this week (Monday 26 Jan).
Now in its eighth year, the fund supports organisations which help people to get active, meet new people and access sustainable transport. So far it has provided grants for almost 60 community projects benefitting 4,000 local people.
Last year, the council supported five walking groups and four cycling projects through the Community Walking and Cycling Fund, with more than 80 walking sessions, 40 cycling sessions and two bike maintenance courses taking place. Read the full list of the nine groups which successfully received funding last year. The application process is open until Monday 2 March and eligible voluntary or community organisations can apply for up to £2,500 to support their project.
Cllr Clyde Loakes MBE, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate and Air Quality said: I’m delighted that our fantastic Community Walking and Cycling Fund is once again ready to help dedicated organisations doing great work in Waltham Forest.
“This is all about empowering local groups to make a difference in their communities and supporting local people to boost their active travel options. It's about working together to help residents lead healthier lifestyles, as well as tackling social isolation and loneliness.
“We have seen a lot of local groups go from strength to strength with support from the Fund, including Cycle Sisters, which helps make cycling more accessible for Muslim women and girls; and Age UK, which runs beginner cycling lessons for people aged 60 and over - to name just two!
“This year we want to expand further and help more local people than ever. If you are a local organisation that supports walking or cycling initiatives, or other types of active travel, then please have a look at applying for this opportunity for funding.”
