New roundel artworks were unveiled at Blackhorse Road station last week with a celebration event to mark the occasion. The creative project was developed by artist Maud Milton and community organisation William Morris Big Local and was backed by Transport for London (TfL), Waltham Forest and Taylor Wimpey.

The station is now home to a collection of roundels created by Maud Milton with members of the community, helping to reflect Blackhorse Lane’s industrial past and present, as well as the lives of people that call it home.

The Blackhorse Lane area of Walthamstow is one of the key growth areas for the borough with new homes are springing up alongside existing industrial units and Victorian terraces.

Recently, Blackhorse Lane was accredited as a Creative Enterprise Zone now known as the Blackhorse Collective. The Creative Enterprise Zones are one of the Mayor of London’s flagship cultural programmes, dedicated to ensuring artists and creatives are supported to put down roots in local areas and giving them opportunities to grow their careers and businesses. The Creative Enterprise Zone is bringing exciting new businesses alongside much needed housing and opportunities to East London which has been home to industry and creativity for over a hundred years

Councillor Ahsan Khan, Deputy Leader for Waltham Forest Council and Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration, said: “These vibrant mosaics, co-created by residents, is a fantastic way to showcase local talent for everyone in the area to enjoy. The art compliments the recent £1m improvements to the station which was delivered by the Council in partnership with the GLA and TfL.”

Rory O’Neil, TfL’s General Manager for London Overground expressed that “We know our stations are an important part of the community so it’s fantastic that Maud Milton has led local community group, residents, and staff in contributing to these new colourful mosaics at Blackhorse Road station. These unique roundels will provide a splash of colour for all our customers to enjoy.”

Maud Milton said: “I’m excited to see these unique roundels for this station and community up in situ, getting such a lot of love and appreciation from commuters, locals and roundel fans. There is a different twist at Blackhorse Road Station to all the other projects we have made. The BHR series is a roundel trail of 16: one large roundel and 15 small roundels with their unique name-bars in key parts of the station.”
