Proposed industrial action in December and January has been cancelled, meaning bin collections will continue as usual over this period.
After ongoing negotiations between FCC Environment and the GMB and Unite trade unions, staff accepted an improved pay offer on Wednesday 3 December.
FCC Environment are the council's bin collection, street cleansing and parks contractor, so the proposed strike would have caused disruption to services over the Christmas and New Year period.
Cllr Clyde Loakes, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate and Air Quality, welcomed this news. He said,
I am very pleased that FCC Environment and the GMB / Unite trade unions have agreed on improved pay proposals for FCC Environment staff. This agreement means that proposed strike action will not go ahead, and bin collections in Waltham Forest will continue without disruption over the Christmas and New Year period.
We know how hard collection staff work, often in challenging weather conditions, and we appreciate their dedication and effort. Residents will be relieved that their collections will continue over the busy holiday period and into the New Year, which is always a challenging and busy time for these important services. This is a good result for Waltham Forest and for the hard-working collection staff who empty our bins and keep our borough clean.
We will now continue with a revised schedule for bin collections over the festive period, as crews do not work on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day.
