Black History Month 2023
Published: Wednesday 1 October
Filed under: Together we are Waltham Forest, Making culture count, Arts and culture

We're celebrating Black History Month with a huge range of exciting and inspirational events to get involved in. Discover the cultural history our borough through its past residents, support local black-owned businesses, take part in art and craft workshops, go on walks, runs, see performances and exhibitions and much more.

The theme for Black History Month 2025 is 'Standing Firm in Power and Pride' a powerful tribute to the resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment to progress that defines the Black community across the globe.

#BHM4ALL

This year a new #BHM4ALL programme launches through the dedication and work of our community groups. Together, they are creating opportunities to celebrate heritage and honour contributions, bringing residents and visitors together in a spirit of pride, creativity and unity.

What's On in Chingford Mount

Taking place throughout October, join everyone at Chingford Mount for an exciting month-long programme of events, workshops, pop-up markets, park events, exhibitions, walks, talks and plenty more.

Unheard Stories

The Unheard Stories exhibition are the stories of black elders living in Waltham Forest. They are the stories of black people who came to Britain in the 1960s and 1970s from the Caribbean and other countries of the former British Empire. Stories of courage, resilience, triumphs, love, family and, above all, lives of hard, hard work. Of facing and overcoming racism and discrimination.

Dates: Wednesday 1 October to Friday 31 October

Location: Hale End Library, Castle Avenue, E4 9QD

Leyton Más Window Display

Viewed from Coronation Square, a showcase of joy-filled carnival art made by members of the Afro-Caribbean Elders Association and pupils from St Joseph’s, Willowfield and Downsell primary schools.

Also on display are costume pieces from AFCA Movements and London School of Samba, and a selection of photographs by Vicki Couchman of GB Carnival events.

Date: Wednesday 1 October to Friday 31 October

Location: Carnival House, Coronation Square, 116 Oliver Road, E10 5UJ
