Standard of proof
The BACME service deals with issues related to school behaviour, attendance, and children missing from education. For example, a child might be considered missing from education if:
- they are not enrolled in school
- have been excluded
- parents have withdrawn them from school without arranging for alternative education
The BACME service makes sure that all children of compulsory school age have access to education and that their attendance is regularly monitored and supported. It also facilitates:
- early intervention referrals by connecting families with services such as Early Help, Educational Psychology, or Special Educational Needs (SEN) support
- restorative practices by promoting approaches to address underlying issues and support positive behaviour
- preventative strategies by working with schools and families to implement strategies aimed at reducing the risk of future exclusions
BACME support for suspensions
When a child is suspended, BACME:
- provides clarification of rights and responsibilities
- explains the suspension process
- ensures the school provides appropriate work during the suspension period
- assists in organising a reintegration meeting upon the child's return to school
BACME support for permanent exclusions
In cases of permanent exclusion, BACME:
- offers guidance on the exclusion process
- arranges suitable full-time education from the sixth school day after exclusion
- assists parents in understanding their right to appeal the exclusion decision and supporting them through the process
