Your child going to school for the first time is one of the most exciting (and nerve-racking) parts of your parenting journey!
All children learn and develop at different rates.
Below, we list some areas to consider to help your child have a happy and successful transition to primary school.
While the focus will be on getting your little one ready to start school, don't forget to prepare yourself as well for this transition.
Self-care independence
Learning to look after yourself is the first step to developing independence.
Self-care includes washing, dressing, eating, and drinking.
Can your child put on and take off their clothes and shoes by themselves?
Can your child use a fork, knife, and spoon when eating their food?
Use the following links to find out more.
Toilet and potty-training
Can your child go to the toilet and wash their hands by themselves?
All children learn differently and at different rates so learning how to use the potty/toilet independently and stopping wearing nappies is a big milestone for many children.
These are new and exciting skills for them to learn with your help.
To make this process easier for you and your child, follow the evidence-based three-step ‘Let's Go Potty’ approach.
Oral Health
Have you registered your child with an NHS dentist?
Help your child understand why they should brush their teeth twice a day, an important skill as they get closer to the age where they can do this independently.
The HENRY team in Waltham Forest offers free teeth-brushing and oral health workshops.
They also regularly compile a list of NHS dentists currently accepting new patients.
Immunisations
Is your child up to date with their childhood vaccinations?
It’s important that vaccines are given on time for the best effectiveness, which will help protect your child from serious illnesses like flu, measles, and whooping cough.
But if you or your child missed any of their vaccines, you can contact your GP to catch up.
Learning Together Project
Waltham Forest’s Starting School Together initiative has been created by qualified teachers and speech and language therapists, in partnership with the home-learning service Chit Chat Pitter Pat.
This programme includes top tips on how parents/carers can help their children with their development in the lead-up to their transition to school, through fun activities at home.
Every child develops at their own pace, but if you have concerns about your child’s development at any time, you can raise these with the Health Visiting team by calling 0300 033 6200 or drop in at your local Family Hub to seek support and advice.
