Becoming a school governor

School governors play a vital role in helping children and young people achieve their potential. 

As a governor, you will: 

  • help make important decisions about the school’s future
  • support school leaders
  • use your skills to improve education in your community 

Who can become a school governor

To apply, you must: 

  • be aged 18 years or over
  • be willing to complete an enhanced DBS check
  • commit to attending meetings
  • support your school for up to 4 years 

You do not need: 

  • formal qualifications
  • to be a parent
  • experience in education 

Governing boards value a wide range of skills and life experience. People from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. A full list of eligibility and disqualifications is available through the Hub.
