Free Early Education and Childcare

Eligibility and funding for free early education and childcare for under‑5s.

All 3 and 4-year-old children are eligible for up to 15 hours of free early education and child care a week from the term after their third birthday.

Some 2-year-olds whose families are in receipt of certain benefits and some children with SEND are eligible for up to 15 hours of free early education and child care a week from the term after their second birthday.

Children from eligible working families are eligible for up to 30 hours of free early education and child care a week from the term after they are 9 months old until they reach statutory school age.

As part of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, all early years providers and OFSTED-registered childminders should ensure their children can engage and learn in an inclusive environment, where their needs are supported.
