Background

As Waltham Forest grows, we are working hard to ensure that the transport network in the town centre can support growth and that everyone can get around.

The council is working closely with Transport for London to transform the Walthamstow gyratory junction of Hoe Street and Selborne Road to make the town centre a more pleasant, accessible, and safer area for everyone.

What is happening?

Work to install a new bridge to replace the Victorian structure at the junction of Hoe Street and Selborne Road is now completed and working with Transport for London (TfL) and Network Rail, we have now allowed traffic to start using the new bridge. The final touches have now been made to the new road bridge, including the installation of permanent traffic lights and new road markings.  Work has also been completed on the entrance to Station Approach.

Following a consultation with residents in the spring of 2018 work has begun on transforming the former bridge into a new large public space, complete with pollution absorbing shrubs and trees and space for pop-up stalls.

Transport for London has also concluded their consultation and agreed to move the 357 and 97 bus stops from Walthamstow Bus Station onto the new gyratory junction.

The final works on Hoe Street are now being completed as well as works to improve footways on Selborne Road, extend the eastbound bus lane to the bus station entrance and install improved traffic lights outside the bus station.  This work may cause some temporary disruption to bus services and vehicles along Selborne Road during March 2019.

Overnight resurfacing of Selborne Road is expected to take place during the first week of April 2019.

All the works are expected to be completed by spring 2019.
