Tour de Waltham Forest

Our annual free family friendly cycling event is back in 2022

Tour de Waltham Forest is a great family day out for those who are new to travelling by bicycle and those more experienced riders who want to get to know the borough better.

This year we are hosting seven different routes across two days, with varying lengths to cater for all abilities. All routes are free to take part in.

Cycle shop voucher scheme

As a ‘thank you’ for taking part in Tour De Waltham Forest, all participants received a £10 Cycle Shop gift voucher when you completed your ride. This voucher can be used to contribute towards the cost of a service or product in one of five participating local Cycle Shops in the borough:

  • Sick Bike Repairs
  • Racer Rosa
  • Go Further Cycling
  • Mamachari Cycles
  • Walthamstow Cycles
  • Cycle Spirit

In addition, Decathlon Chingford are offering 10% off bike maintenance (exc. parts), following the event when using the voucher. This voucher is only redeemable at the Chingford store.

Vouchers can be used as money off a product/service, or as full payment for a product/service worth £10. If a voucher is used to purchase a product worth less than £10, the user will not be entitled to change. All vouchers will be valid from Monday 20 June to Friday 30 September 2022.

Saturday 18 June

There are four routes available on Saturday 18 June which all start and finish in Leyton Jubilee Park.

Available routes are:

  • Hackney Hop (7km)
  • Leyton Loop (11km)
  • Walthamstow Wander (15km)
  • Leytonstone Lap (20km)

Sunday 19 June

There are three routes available on Sunday 19 June which all start and finish in Fellowship Square, Walthamstow.

Available routes are:

  • Lea Loop (9km)
  • Highams Hop (12km)
  • Chingford Circle (20km)

Dr Bike

Cycle Confident Dr Bike mechanics will be on hand to check over your cycle before the ride. The mechanics will be able to check over your tyre pressures, brakes, chain and gears for free.

If your cycle requires a check-over before you take part, please arrive in plenty of time ahead of your scheduled ride start time. Cycles will be checked over on a first come, first served basis.

Saturday Routes

Hackney Hop (7km; 45 minutes to 1 hour)

A leisurely route on segregated cycle tracks and the canal towpaths in Hackney Marshes.

Leyton Loop (11km; 1 to 1.5 hours)

A tour taking in Hackney Marshes, the River Lea and the quiet residential streets of the Coppermill area.

Walthamstow Wander (15km; 1.25 to 1.75 hours)

A tour taking in Hackney Marshes, the River Lea and the quiet residential streets of Walthamstow.

Leytonstone Lap (20km; 1.5 to 2 hours)

An adventurous 20km ride that features four local green spaces and the quiet residential streets of Walthamstow, Leyton and Leytonstone.

Sunday Routes

Lea Loop (9km; 45 minutes to 1 hour)

A leisurely route on segregated cycle tracks, canal tow paths of the River Lea navigation, and the quiet residential streets of Walthamstow.

Highams Park Hop (12km; 1 to 1.5 hours)

A tour on segregated cycle tracks, canal tow paths of the River Lea navigation, and the quiet residential streets of Walthamstow and Highams Park.

Chingford Circle (20km; 1.5 to 2 hours)

An adventurous ride that features our favourite spots in Walthamstow, Highams Park and Chingford.

Frequently asked questions

How do I register?

  • Please register online ahead of the event for Saturday or Sunday on our Eventbrite page.

Can I register on the day?

  • At present we will not be accepting registrations on the day of the event. Please register online ahead of the event.

Is there an entry fee?

  • No. Tour de Waltham Forest is a free event to participate in.

What time do I need to arrive and how long will it take?

  • Please select your arrival time for your route on the Eventbrite booking page

What are the routes?

  • A map of the routes will be available via. the Eventbrite webpage at least one month prior to the event.

Are the routes suitable for my bike?

  • All routes go via the Lea Valley canal towpath and therefore may not suitable for road bikes. The routes are cargo bike and adapted cycle friendly and you will not be required to carry your bike over any bridges*

*Leyton Loop, Walthamstow Wander and Leytonstone Lap require using Horseshoe Bridge which features steep approaches.

Will roads be closed?

  • The majority of all routes are on segregated cycle tracks or off road. There are small parts of each route which are on quiet residential roads and these will remain open to other traffic throughout the event.

Can I hire a bike for the event?

  • If you would like to hire a bike for the event through the Council’s free Community Cycle Loan Scheme, please email cyclehire@walthamforest.gov.uk
  • There are only a limited number of bikes and cargo bikes available which will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
  • Bikes must be collected from Low Hall Depot prior to the event day and cannot be collected on 18 or 19 June.

Is there a minimum age to take part?

  • There is no minimum age to take part however all children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Are the rides led by a ride leader?

  • There will be two time slots for each route: one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
  • The rides in the afternoon will be led by a ride leader, however the rides in the morning will be self-guided using wayfinding signage.

How do I get there? Is car parking available?

  • The nearest station to Leyton Jubilee Park is Lea Bridge and bikes are permitted on Greater Anglia services at any time.
  • If you need to drive to the event at Leyton Jubilee Park, there are a small number of spaces available in the car park on Marsh Lane.
  • The nearest stations to Fellowship Square are Walthamstow Central and Wood Street. Bikes are permitted on the London Overground at any time over the weekend.
  • If you need to drive to Fellowship Square, there are a small number of spaces available in the nearby Bedford Road car park at Lloyd Park.

Do I need to wear a helmet?

  • It is recommended that you wear a helmet for the event but this is not mandatory. Waltham Forest Council will not be responsible for any injuries that result from not wearing a helmet.

Will food and drink be available?

  • Food and drink will be available to purchase at Leyton Jubilee Park (Saturday) and Fellowship Square (Sunday)

Will there be toilet facilities?

  • Toilet facilities will be available at the start/finish at Leyton Jubilee Park (Saturday) and Fellowship Square (Sunday)
  • There will be marshals along the route who will be able to direct you to the nearest free public toilet.

Can I fundraise?

  • Yes you can: please choose your own charity and set up a JustGiving page or similar to fundraise yourself.

Will there be first aid?

  • Yes, first aid will be available at the start/finish locations and first responders will be present on all routes.

Will the event take place if it rains?

  • The rides will not be cancelled if it rains however in the event of severe weather a decision will be made on the day as to whether it is safe to carry on.
  • Every effort will be made to inform registered participants however please follow the Council’s Facebook and Twitter accounts for updates.
