About the scheme

High Road Leytonstone is one of the borough’s most important high streets. It provides a key transport corridor for commuters, linking Leytonstone and South Leytonstone with Maryland and Stratford, with more than 11,000 drivers, 6,000 pedestrians and 1,200 cyclists using the road every day.

The street is home to residents, as well as being a commercial hub, with many vibrant small businesses.

In 2021, we asked you what the area should look like in the future and used this information to create the South Leytonstone Area Framework. Some of the key priorities raised included activating High Road Leytonstone by improving public spaces and making it easier to walk and cycle to key transport hubs and nearby town centres.

We want to work with you to build on these priorities to make the area more sustainable, support businesses to thrive and create spaces for everyone to enjoy.

This aligns with the borough’s goals to create streets that are safe and easy to walk, wheel and cycle on, to boost active travel and reduce vehicle dominance to address the climate crisis.

Consultation and engagement

We want to make any improvements to High Road Leytonstone in partnership with people who work, live and visit the area.

Tell us your local insights and specific ideas about what you would like to see in the area, or if there are local issues you think need to be addressed on this road.

You can do this by completing the online survey and mapping exercise.

Another great way to provide feedback is to come along to one of our events.

  • drop in: Tuesday, 18 November 2025, Leytonstone library hall, E11 1HG from 4:30pm to 7pm
  • pop up: Saturday, 22 November 2025, Jubilee Gardens, E11 3JW from 12:30pm to 3:30pm
  • guided walk: Saturday, 29 November 2025, meeting point Leytonstone library, E11 1HG from 11:00am to 1pm. Please make sure you sign up for the walk ahead of time so we know how many people are attending
