Access to Cycles

""

Here in Waltham Forest, we’re passionate about sustainable and active travel and want to encourage as many people as possible to choose this when travelling in the borough.

If you need assistance in accessing a cycle, please find further details below on the schemes we have available.

We have over 30 community bikes that are available for loan to anybody who lives, works or studies in the borough. For a small refundable deposit, the bikes are available to loan for up to one month. Due to the popularity of the scheme we often operate a waiting list system.

Standard bikes

We have a fleet of standard two-wheeler bikes for you to hire for up to one month and all that is required is a refundable deposit of £30 whilst the bike is loaned to you.  All bikes come with a helmet, lights and a lock which must all be returned with the bike following the end of your hire period.

Christiania Taxi

From Denmark, the Christiania range of bikes won the Danish Design Awards in 2011. Our electric-assist taxi model has three-wheels and is great for pedalling older children, teenagers and adults. The bike is amazing for social rides and like all Christianias is unique for having one handlebar. This design feature helps stability with the rider encouraged to steer with just one hand positioning in the centre of the handlebar.

To hire a bike please get in touch:

Why not trial one of our cargo bikes or standard bikes free of charge? Simply follow these three easy steps.

1) Email us at cyclehire@walthamforest.gov.uk letting us know:

  • Which bike you'd like to hire

  • How long the hire is for

  • The date of hire

  • If you're hiring it on your own or as a couple or family - all users will need to have an induction

  • Your preferred contact details.

2) We’ll get in touch:
When we receive your email, we’ll check availability and get in touch with you to book you in. A refundable deposit of £100 for a cargo bike and £30 for a standard bike is required (instructions on how to pay this will be emailed to you).

3) We’ll train you up:
As the cargo bikes are different to standard bikes, we’ll invite you down on the day of pick up for an on-road induction to help you get used to the bike (secure cycle parking is available at the induction location). You will also need to sign either a cargo bike loan agreement or a standard bike loan agreement.

Please note:

  • This scheme is for anyone who lives, works or studies in Waltham Forest.

  • Bikes are only available to be collected on weekdays between 9:00am and 4.30pm.

The Council is working in partnership with Peddle My Wheels to offer the Try Before You Bike scheme.

This allows residents to trial a new or nearly new bike for a monthly fee and if the bike is not for you, you can return it. The scheme is comprised of children’s bikes, standard adult bikes, adaptive cycles, cargo bikes and e-assist cycles and prices start from just £20 per month.

All bikes come with lights, lock and helmet and you can add any other accessories you may need. Bikes have maintenance and theft cover available for peace of mind and there are no deposit, interest or cancellation fees.
