COVID-19 - Tier 4 update

Chingford Cemetery

  • Monday to Saturday: 7:30am to 4pm - All gates open
  • Sunday: 10am to 4pm - All gates open

Queens Road Cemetery in Walthamstow will remain open from

  • 7:30am to 4pm Monday to Saturday
  • Sundays 10am to 4pm

Please remember to stay 2 metres away from anyone else using the cemetery including our staff.

Funerals

Chingford Mount Cemetery is still operational for funerals.

Funerals can be attended by a maximum of 30 people, and it is advised that only close friends and family attend. Linked ceremonial events such as stone settings and ash scatterings can also continue with up to 6 people in attendance. Anyone working is not included. Social distancing should be maintained between people who do not live together or share a support bubble.

In order to protect staff and the public and to ensure we can continue to provide this critical services, our employees will be keeping a safe distance from funeral gatherings during services.

All handling of the deceased including lowering and removal of putlogs will be carried out by the Funeral Directors.

Our primary focus during the current situation is to continue providing burials. We have therefore ceased provision of grave selection and families backfilling graves. If required, we may email a photograph of the grave area and cemetery plan for upcoming burials.

We apologise any inconvenience or upset this may cause. We are constantly reviewing the situation and if needed will make further changes to these restrictions.

General enquiries can be made over the phone or via email directly to our offices. Please leave a message if you cannot get through and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Phones are often busy so please bear with us and leave a message so we can respond.

Family history searches currently restricted as during the current virus outbreak, Cemetery Services are being focussed on our core function of burials. Searches required for burials will take priority. Please be patient with family history searches as we do have a backlog.

Additional services such as family history searches will be undertaken as and when resources allow during this time. Please expect that there may be delays there may be delays caused by priorities being focused on our frontline service due to the ongoing pandemic.

When visiting our cemeteries 

To respect the needs of others, visitors are asked not to willfully create any disturbance in the Cemetery or behave in a way that may be a nuisance to others. In particular, the playing of games and sports is not permitted. The Cemetery is also controlled by a Public Spaces Protection Order. This prohibits amongst other things, the use of alcohol, behaving in a manner which is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress, and littering within the Cemetery.

Chingford Mount Cemetery and Queens Road Cemetery opening hours

Month Monday to Saturday Sundays
January to March 7:30am to 4pm 10am to 4pm
April to September 7:30am to 7:30pm 10am to 6pm
October to December 7:30am to 4pm 10am to 4pm

As the gates will be locked at the times stated in order to secure the cemetery, all visitors and their vehicles are asked to leave the cemetery in good time. No person is permitted to be in the cemetery outside the published opening hours.

It may be necessary at times to lock the gates earlier than stated due to circumstances beyond our control. If this is necessary appropriate notices will be displayed advising visitors of this.

The Council reserves the right to limit public entry or to close the cemeteries at any time.

Anyone can be buried in any of the following cemeteries.

Chingford Mount Cemetery

Only residents of the borough can get new graves and cremated remains plots. The deceased must have lived in Waltham Forest when they died. We will need to see proof of residency.

Walthamstow Queens Road Cemetery

This cemetery is now full and unable to accept new graves.

You must contact us if you want to erect a memorial or add an extra inscription to a headstone, even if you own the grave.

We will need to check the memorial or inscription to make sure it complies with our cemetery regulations.

Guidelines for memorials

Our guidelines for memorials are:

  • headstone - marble, granite or other stone to measure:
    height 36” (mandatory), width 36” maximum, thickness 4“ maximum
  • vase - marble or granite to measure: 8” x 8” x 8” mandatory.
    no more than two allowed per grave
  • temporary memorials in a wooden cross, can be erected providing they are not more than 36” in high

Memorial maintenance

The grave owner is responsible for:

  • maintaining headstones, kerbs or other memorials 
  • arranging suitable repairs when necessary
  • removing these to a safe  place outside the cemetery grounds unless laid down directly and safely on the plot

We can search our burial registers for a fee, or you can see the burial registers yourself.
For us to search, please download the form below, complete it and return it to us at the address in the Contact section below. You will need to include the correct payment by cheque. If you prefer to pay by other means, please contact us.

You can walk your dogs in the cemetery but kept them on a lead and stay on the main drive. Please don’t walk your dog along the footpaths, grave rows or near grave memorials (except guide dogs).
