New bins and new street signage will be on Station Road E4 and Hoe Street E17 from the week commencing 26 February 2024

Research has identified that providing services for dry mixed recycling and food waste for FLASH is challenging. New Government legislation means that we need to provide a food collection to all houses in Waltham Forest, including flats above shops by April 2026.

There is a lack of space outside this type of property to place containers (bins) either behind, beside or in front of them.

Waltham Forest aims to assist residents in FLASH properties by increasing their service provision as well as updating and adding new signage. This will take place in two locations in Waltham Forest, Hoe Street E17 and Station Road E4. The trial will include using a different style of bin to collect the food waste, vinyl floor signage indicating designated areas for residents to place their waste and recycling and increased communications and support during the trial.

Waltham Forest are working with ReLondon – a partnership between the Mayor of London and London’s boroughs – to trial and enhance provisions by piloting these -new initiatives. There is currently little research and information on best practice to these types of dwellings and this pilot project will help inform how London moves forward to collect waste and recycling from Flats Above Shops.

Increasing the recycling of food is an important way to combat the climate emergency as it helps to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and methane. Food waste can be made into eco-friendly fertilisers for farms and to generate renewable energy.

Information for residents of Hoe Street E17 and Station Road E4

  • You've received a cardboard caddy because it's easier to deliver compared to plastic caddies, especially when space constraints might prevent leaving them directly outside your door. This way, you can start recycling your food waste while waiting for or collecting your permanent caddy.
  • Caddies are available from Walthamstow Library, William Morris Community Centre, Walthamstow Toy Library (Somers Road) and Chingford Library.
  • Recycling bags only will be available from Walthamstow Library or Chingford Library who are helping to support the campaign.
  • If you observe a bin being misused or overflowing, kindly send an email to wasteteam@walthamforest.gov.uk with specific location details, and we will address the issue promptly.
