New development Coronation Square welcomes first residents
The first residents have started to move into their new homes at Coronation Square, Leyton, this week. This marks huge a milestone for the project, a partnership between Waltham Forest Council and developer Taylor Wimpey.
Just a stone’s throw from the Breyer Group Stadium where Leyton Orient FC play, Coronation Square will provide 750 new homes, with fifty per cent of them being affordable, responding to Waltham Forest’s housing need.
The development will also include a District Heating Network, a new health hub, a pre-school nursery, and an enhanced indoor sports and leisure centre with community facilities. A new attractive public square and cultural space will be created called ‘Market Square’ and will feature a fountain surrounded by commercial space for shops and businesses, forming in effect, a new town centre.
Construction began in May 2021 and phase one of the development is due to complete in 2024. Following the opening of a new leisure centre, Phase two will see the existing Score Centre demolished, and construction will begin in 2024 and is due to be completed in late 2026.
Waltham Forest resident Boyan, is moving into his first home at Coronation Square. He said: “I moved to Leytonstone two and a half years ago and I grew to love east London a lot, particularly Waltham Forest. I’ve just bought a flat in Coronation Square and I chose it because of the location, the whole of east London is expanding and the upcoming area in my opinion is Leyton, because of the construction that’s happening at the moment. The Tube station is five to seven minutes away from my new flat, you’ve got all the restaurants, new shops, and international shops too which helps me. I work in Stratford too so it’s very easy for me to commute and that’s another reason why I chose to be here.”
Councillor Ahsan Khan views the Coronation Square development
Councillor Ahsan Khan, Deputy Leader for Waltham Forest Council and Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration, recently visited Coronation Square to view the new homes. He said: “Seeing the new homes at Coronation Square and meeting residents who are moving in soon shows that this will be an amazing place and a catalyst for growth in this part of the borough. Not only is Coronation Square providing excellent, energy-efficient and affordable housing for Waltham Forest residents, but it’s also creating great work opportunities for local people. This is just the beginning of a new town centre where people can access everything they need in the neighbourhood within 15 minutes.”
