Collecting Council rubbish

Important service update

The service is running one day behind due to a shortage of drivers

If you don’t need a bulky household item like a sofa or a washing machine, you can drop it off at a waste and recycling centre or arrange to have it taken away.

For large item collections, residents have three options to choose from:

  1. Arrange a household large item collection
  2. Arrange an electrical large item ('white goods') collection
  3. Use the house and garden clearance service

For businesses or landlords, please see our commercial large item removal page.

Use the large item checker to see the best thing to do with your item.

Explore your options and book the large item collection that works for you.

Definition of Large Items/Bulky Waste

Collection services often describe bulky waste as "items you take with you when you move house",  to differentiate between what may reasonably be considered trade waste rather than household waste". With such a caveat, a typical bulky waste collection service is likely to:

Include

Exclude

furniture, electrical appliances such as white goods, bicycles, rugs, garden furniture and other portable household items.

carpets or underlay, kitchen or bathroom units (i.e. those that are generally fixed to the wall), black bag waste, doors and windows, fencing panels or gates, greenhouses or sheds, boilers or storage heaters.

The Council’s large item collection team will collect up to five items free of charge per booking. Please check the item checker section to see what items can be collected free of charge and what items are chargeable.

If your item is in a good enough condition to be used by someone else please let us know when booking a large item collection with the Council. Where possible the Council will aim to pass on reusable items to Brightsparks where items can be sold in Brightsparks Home Store shop (842 - 844 High Rd Leyton, Leyton, E10 6AE). Passing on items for reuse saves resources, reduces waste and helps the local community furnish their homes.

You can also pay for a quicker collection should you want your item(s) collected quicker than the date shown to you when booking.

The Council will not collect items which are too heavy and would require more than 2 people to move. Any glass or mirrored items, please remove any glass from your items if possible or take this to your local recycling centre.

Collection day

On collection day, please leave your items in your front garden within the curtilage of your property by 6am.

Please ensure the items are accessible and visible to the collection crew from the public highway.

Please do not leave items on the pubic highway. Any items left on the public highway can be classified as fly tipping and you may be liable to a £400 fixed penalty notice for fly-tipping.

Please note the large item crew cannot enter your property to take your items.

Supported large item collections - (currently not operational)

If you are currently receiving a supported bin collection service from the Council, you are able to select the option when booking online to have an assisted large item collection service. This means that the large item collection crew will enter your property and collect the booked items from the ground floor of your property. You will need to be home to let the collection crew in to your property.

There are terms and conditions that you need to agree to in order to receive this service.
