The World Cup kicks off this week, and while we prepare to cheer on England, we must also acknowledge the shocking rise in domestic violence statistics at this time.
Studies (such as this one from Lancaster University) show that incidents of domestic violence increase by 38 per cent when England lose a World Cup game, and by 26 per cent when they win. There is also a link between alcohol consumption and sexual harassment (see Drink Aware for more information) which may cause concern for women and girls around match times.
This year, the World Cup takes place between Thursday 11 June and Sunday 19 July, with England’s group stage matches scheduled on Wednesday 17 June, Tuesday 23 June and Saturday 27 June. If England qualify for the knockout stages, more games will follow in July.

A council spokesperson said, “While football can lead to heightened stress levels and alcohol intake, this is not a cause of abuse. Perpetrators choose to use abusive behaviours and there is no excuse for this.
“Here in Waltham Forest, we will be cheering England on and hoping to see them win the World Cup. But we are also committed to protecting the victims and survivors of violence and abuse, and that’s why we are reminding residents that there is support available should you or someone you know need it.”
