Walthamstow and Highams Park will benefit from the Greater London Authority’s (GLA) Summer Streets funding to host outdoor events and activities for all to enjoy this summer.

As well as providing a fun and varied programme of events for residents of all ages, the initiatives celebrate the borough's fantastic creative communities and support local businesses.

This summer, Highams Park will host a three-month long season of music delivered by local creative and community organisations, including Highams Park Planning Group, in partnership with the council.

The aim of the programme is to grow Highams Park’s cultural offer through live music, using outdoor public spaces to support independent local businesses. 

Activities include a series of pop‑up outdoor music performances across the town centre, market events, themed live music events and the testing of a potential new market space at Highams Park Station forecourt.

The Walthamstow Way is a project designed to connect three areas in Walthamstow through new wayfinding and the creation of a trail map. The three areas include:

• Walthamstow Village (Orford Road): a historic area with a high street packed with independent shops, bars and restaurants.
• Ravenswood Industrial Estate: a site packed with makers and producers. Most of the units produce their own drinks, including a brewery alongside cider and gin producers. It’s also home to the famous God’s Own Junk Yard, which houses the largest collection of neon lights in Europe.
• Wood Street: a traditional high street full of independent businesses and with a unique indoor market, and a growing nighttime offer.

The project has been backed by local business groups and will deliver:

• The Walthamstow Way Trail: development of a trail and map from Walthamstow Village to Wood Street via Ravenswood Industrial Estate, which includes more than 25 hospitality businesses
• New signage to link each area
• Piloting new licences for events to take place in two pedestrianised areas in Orford Road and Wood Street
• New seating, parasols for shade, and festoon lighting to make people feel safer in the evening
