Leader and Deputy Leader publish statement for the community
I know that the recent tragic events and the loss of lives in the Indian-administered and Pakistan-administered regions of Kashmir, and in areas of Pakistan, in recent weeks will be causing concern and distress for many in the Waltham Forest community.
I extend the thoughts and prayers of everyone at the council to those affected directly and indirectly both abroad and here in Waltham Forest.
The impact of international developments at a local level can be wide ranging, and I have always been proud of this community and our collective ability to come together to embrace our shared values and unity in response to division.
Whilst I am heartened to see the ceasefire now in place, leading to a cessation of active hostilities, it is vital that we ensure to use this moment as an opportunity for compassion and solidarity.
I am deeply proud that Waltham Forest is home to a wide range of faith communities who regularly come together to celebrate harmony and build understanding such as last summer through Faithfest, an interfaith celebration at Fellowship Square.
We will continue to work closely with all our local faith and community leaders so that together we can tackle challenges and provide support to our whole community. We are also working closely with our local police and schools to monitor any local impact and to ensure the safety, wellbeing, and cohesion of our communities. Our shared priority is to provide reassurance and support, particularly for young people and families who may be feeling vulnerable or distressed. We are committed to responding with sensitivity and unity during this challenging time.
