Cllr Grace Williams statement following the Bondi Beach terror attack

On Sunday morning, as Jewish communities in Waltham Forest and across the world prepared to celebrate Chanukah, we heard the devastating news of the Bondi Beach shooting in which 15 innocent people have so far lost their lives. My thoughts, and those of everyone here, are with the victims and their friends and families at this terrible time.

I recognise the fear and concern that our Jewish friends, neighbours, and colleagues will feel going about their daily lives. We are committed to take every action we can against antisemitism as befits our proud history of standing together to challenge hate and for our shared values.

Following this terrorist attack, the police have announced they will be conducting extra patrols and providing additional support to the Jewish community. They are asking the public to be vigilant at events and to contact them immediately with any concerns. While there is no intelligence suggesting an attack is likely in the UK, we remain alert.

I have contacted Jewish community leaders to express my condolences and offer support. On Sunday 21 December, I will be with the Leytonstone and Wanstead Synagogue for the Menorah lighting ceremony. I hope that many of you are able to light a candle or to join Chanukah events this week in solidarity.

We are stronger together. Love always triumphs over hate. Light over darkness.
