We’ve launched a new initiative to support businesses in promoting alcohol free drinking options.
Pubs, bars, cafes and social clubs across Waltham Forest are joining a new campaign to promote alcohol-free drinks.
Window stickers reading ‘Alcohol Free Drinks Sold Here’ and ‘Alcohol Free Beer on Tap’, have been given to hundreds of Waltham Forest’s licensed venues to help encourage foot traffic from residents who don’t drink or want to drink less.
As alcohol-free options become more popular, we want to promote them to interested residents, helping to support our local economy and ensuring that residents who don’t drink or want to cut down, know that social spaces are available for them.
Tom McKim, co-founder of Clapton Craft, is displaying the stickers at his Wood Street venue. He said:
“The demand we’ve seen for alcohol-free drinks has exploded in the last couple of years, and this is a great way to showcase what’s on offer.
“We’ve seen that some people feel self-conscious about asking if we stock alcohol-free options. Having the sticker as an ice-breaker on the door will help people feel confident they’re available.”
National trends suggest people are reducing the amount of alcohol they drink for a variety of reasons, from boosting physical or mental health to saving money. Alcohol-free alternatives, from beers to wines and spirits, have proved a popular way for people to continue enjoying a familiar social experience, while avoiding some of the harmful effects of alcohol.
With excessive drinking also linked to antisocial behaviour and violence, more moderate drinking can help create safer and more enjoyable neighbourhoods and social spaces.
Cllr Louise Mitchell, Cabinet Member for Health and Adults, said:
"Supporting venues to showcase their alcohol-free options mean residents can make choices that are better for their mental and physical health while still enjoying time out at their local. This is another way we're helping residents to live healthy and happy lives."
Waltham Forest’s booming craft brewery scene is helping boost the profile of zero-alcohol drinks, with several non-alcoholic beers brewed in the borough. London’s only alcohol-free brewery, Nirvana Brewery, is based in Leyton, and sells a wide range, from stouts to pilsners.
