A message of reassurance for the community after violent incident at Leyton mosque
“We are aware of the shocking Islamophobic incident outside Noor Ul Islam mosque in Leyton last night, Tuesday 7 July, in which an individual was attacked and seriously injured. Our thoughts are with the victim of this attack and their loved ones, and we wish them a swift and complete recovery.
“We understand the police have arrested a suspect and that, at this stage, the incident is being treated as a racially motivated attack. We know this incident will be extremely concerning for residents, particularly our Muslim communities.
“The police have confirmed they will put in place extra resources to visit the area, local mosques, places of worship and other community hubs to provide highly visible reassurance and advice. The Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Cllr Charlotte Lafferty, will visit Noor Ul Islam mosque this evening, and I will visit tomorrow.
“Cllr Lafferty, Deputy Leader Cllr Eva Tabbasam, and I are also urgently seeking a meeting with Waltham Forest Council of Mosques to discuss the safety of our Muslim community and how we can continue working together to provide reassurance and support.
“Waltham Forest is a diverse, welcoming borough where we embrace and celebrate all our communities. We reject bigotry, hatred and discrimination in all their forms. We stand with our Muslim community, condemn Islamophobia, and will continue to work with the police, faith leaders and residents to make sure Waltham Forest is safe for everyone.”
