Everyone deserves a safe, warm, and secure home – it’s the foundation for a good life and crucial for health and wellbeing. Yet, too many people in Waltham Forest do not have that security. The number of residents needing temporary accommodation has risen by 91% in just three years, far exceeding the supply of affordable homes.

We’re taking action. Over the past year, we’ve stopped using expensive commercial hotels for temporary accommodation and built thousands of new affordable homes, ranking as the fifth largest council homebuilder in the UK in 2024. Our Temporary Accommodation to Settled Homes Strategy sets out how we will help residents move from temporary accommodation into settled homes where they can truly thrive.

While we’re taking strong local action, we’ll continue to work with the government to close funding gaps and accelerate the delivery of genuinely affordable homes. At the same time, we’ll use every tool we have locally to prevent homelessness and help more residents find a place they can truly call home.
