Rent refunds
Last updated: 20 November 2025
Next review: 20 November 2026
Current tenants, joint tenants, former tenants and leaseholders that were former tenants can request a rent refund if the account in question has sufficient credit.
You will be asked to provide details of your tenancy such as:
- rent payment reference or address including postcode
- proof of identity
- proof of your bank account details
Where there are any monies owed in relation to arrears, outstanding court costs, Housing Benefit/Universal Credit overpayments, the credit will be used to repay those in the first instance and will be deducted from any refund due.
We are not able to process refund requests against accounts in arrears.
Additionally for current tenants, Waltham Forest will leave a credit of up to one month on your rent account to avoid your account falling into arrears.
How you can claim a refund
To make a claim you will need a My Waltham Forest online account, if you do not have one you will need to register for a My Waltham Forest online account.
Once registered follow the steps below:
- Log into your My Waltham Forest account
- Select Services > Housing Refund Request
- If you think you are eligible for a rent refund you will need to make a claim by completing the refund request form and provide all supporting documentation (proof of ID, recent proof of address, proof of bank account details)
If you are unable to complete the online form, please contact our Customer Resolution Centre on 0208 496 3000 and our agents will be happy to help you.
