Music, instruments and music makers are a recurring theme in the work of Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956), the polymath artist, craftsman and print maker who helped establish the William Morris Gallery. This new semi-permanent exhibition in the Brangwyn galleries explores the importance of music, instruments and music makers in Brangwyn’s work. It includes oil paintings, prints and sketches by Brangwyn himself and from his own extensive collection of art, including drawings by Walter Sickert and Frederic, Lord Leighton.
Joy and Solace celebrates the breadth of Brangwyn's artistic interests and pursuits along the theme of music and the people who create it, as a source of entertainment, a profession, and a personal consolation in times of difficulty.
As a result of recent conservation work carried out thanks to the Friends of the William Morris Gallery, some of Brangwyn's work is being exhibited for the first time in living memory.
