Appeal your Council Tax bill
You can appeal your Council Tax bill if:
- you think you’re not responsible for paying the Council Tax
- you’ve claimed a discount or exemption and this hasn’t been awarded or has been refused
- you think any item on your bill (apart from Council Tax Support) has been worked out incorrectly
- a claim for disability reduction hasn’t been granted
- you have to pay a penalty
- we have sent you a completion notice, and you don’t agree with the date on it
Disputing your Council Tax liability
You can dispute your liability if you are wrongly named on a Council Tax bill.
Complete the Council Tax enquiry form
Tell us why you think you’re not liable for paying Council Tax. You’ll need to send us any proof you have when sending your form.
We will write to tell you of our decision within 2 months of receiving your enquiry.
Appeal your Council Tax band
Council Tax bands are set by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA).
If you think your property band is wrong, visit the GOV.UK website to challenge your Council Tax band.

Also known as a legal right to challenge, or ‘making a proposal if you think your band is wrong and either:
- you have been paying Council Tax on your property for less than 6 months
- VOA has changed your Council Tax band in the last 6 months
You may be able to get a refund if you have been in a higher band than you should be.
