Who we are and what we do?

Streetbase is a peer-to-peer engagement programme in Waltham Forest, designed to engage young people, build relationships, and connect them with positive opportunities and services.

The programme is delivered by the council’s core youth engagement groups, the Young Advisors (YA) and the Youth Independent Advisory Group (YIAG). Members of these groups, aged 16-25 and residents of Waltham Forest, are specially trained to deliver peer engagement on the streets within the borough. The aim of Streetbase is to engage and build relationships with young people, listening to key concerns they raise, and signposting them to positive activities, services, and support. The concerns raised by young people are fed directly back into the council and wider services to ensure they are best responding to needs and hearing the voices of young people, in a timely way. Streetbase operates under the Stronger Communities Directorate of the London Borough of Waltham Forest.

Information we hold about you

As part of the Streetbase programme, we may collect and process the following types of personal information:

  • Contact information including name, email address, phone number, and social media usernames provided voluntarily.
  • Demographic information such as age, gender, ethnicity, and any other relevant information you choose to share with us.
  • Details of the engagement with the Streetbase team, including anonymised summaries of what was discussed.
  • Any personal details you choose to share with us during your engagement with the programme.

We collect only the information necessary to achieve the purposes outlined in this notice and ensure it is handled responsibly.

Why we need your information and how we use it?

We use personal data collected through the Streetbase peer-to-peer engagement programme for the following purposes:

  • Signpost young people to positive activities, services, and opportunities available within the borough.
  • Share the opinions and views young people share with us (anonymously) with relevant services within the council and at meetings. This ensures their perspectives are heard, considered, and reflected in council discussions and actions.
  • Track and report on the number of young people engaged through the programme. This information may also be shared with funders to demonstrate the impact and effectiveness of the programme.

We only use personal data for these purposes and handle it in accordance with applicable data protection laws to protect your privacy and rights.

The Lawful basis for the processing

In cases where we handle identifiable personal data, we rely on the individual’s clear consent and public task to collect and use their personal data for specific purposes, such as signposting them to services and opportunities.

We ensure that any identifiable personal data is handled responsibly and in accordance with data protection laws. Individuals have the right to withdraw their consent at any time. If a young person wishes to withdraw consent, they can do so by informing the Streetbase member during engagement or after initial contact has been made by emailing: roni.weir02@walthamforest.gov.uk

Once consent is withdrawn, we will cease processing your identifiable personal data.

The Streetbase programme also processes data for monitoring and evaluation. This data is shared anonymously and does not contain any personally identifiable information.

As a result, the processing of this anonymised data does not require a specific lawful basis under data protection laws.

For more details on the Lawful Basis see the ICO guidance.

Who your information will be shared with (if applicable)

Streetbase is committed to protecting the privacy of the young people we engage with and will only share personal data when necessary and in compliance with data protection laws.

If a safeguarding concern arises during engagement, a summary of the interaction and relevant demographic details (e.g., age, gender, ethnicity) will be shared with the Urgent Response Coordinator in the Community Safety Team. This is done in accordance with our legal duty to safeguard children and young people, as outlined in the Children Act 1989 and 2004, and relevant statutory guidance.

Sharing this information does not require consent.

How long we will keep your information

We will retain personal data collected through the Streetbase programme for no longer than necessary to fulfil the purposes outlined in this notice.

  • Anonymised data, such as feedback and engagement details, may be kept indefinitely for reporting, analysis, and to help improve the programme, as it no longer identifies individuals.
  • Identifiable personal data, such as contact information, will be retained for 6 +1 years to fulfil the purpose for which it was collected (i.e., providing signposting, engaging with young people, or connecting them to opportunities). Once this purpose is complete, the data will either be securely deleted or anonymised.

Retention periods are determined based on the purpose of processing, any legal or regulatory requirements, and the nature of the data. If we no longer need your personal data for the purposes for which it was collected, it will be securely deleted or anonymized.
