Who we are and what we do

The Council has various statutory responsibilities for Care Leavers in terms of the Children Act 1989. The Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000, and the Children and Families Act 2014.

Job Centre Plus and Waltham Forest Council provide an enhanced service to support young people leaving care into education, employment, and training.

Information we hold about you

In order to provide the service to you the following information about you may be processed:

  • Name
  • Data of Birth
  • National Insurance Number
  • Address

Why we need your information and how we use it

The purpose and use of personal data are necessary to provide an enhanced service. This will assist you to claim and receive the benefits you are entitled to. Processing and use are also necessary to gain entry into education, employment, and training.

The lawful basis for the processing

Your data will only be processed on the basis of your consent.  You can withdraw your consent at any stage by contacting the Corporate Parenting Service using the above details.

Who your information will be shared with

Where you have given consent, your information will be shared with:

  • Job Centre Plus
  • Your GP / Community Doctor, Dentist, Substance Use worker, Mental Health worker, Sexual Health Clinic
  • Criminal Justice Services – e.g. Youth Offending Service (YOS), Probation Service, Police, Gangs Team

It may be necessary to share your information without your consent in the Prevention and Detection of Crime. We may also share your information and/or for the purposes of Safeguarding.

How long we will keep your information

The Council retains Care Leaver data for 75 years. This is in conformity with section 9(1) of the Arrangements for the Placement of Children (General) Regulations 1991. Records held by Job Centre Plus will be subject to the Department of Work and Pensions retention periods.
