School calendar for 2017-18

The Deregulation Bill was set to remove the statutory duty for Local Authorities to set term dates for community, voluntary controlled, community special schools and maintained nurseries in its area. However, in September 2015 the Department of Education said that this aspect of the bill will not commence.

Therefore, the Council continues to hold a statutory duty to set school term dates and holiday dates in its area.

Governing bodies of foundation, voluntary aided and foundation special schools are able to set their own term dates but they usually choose to adopt the same dates as the Local authority, however families are recommended to contact their school directly to confirm this.

Local schools were consulted with on term dates for 2017-18 between 7 October and 18 November 2016. The dates below have been agreed by Cabinet.

Autumn Term 2017

  • Friday 1 September 2017 to Wednesday 20 December 2017
  • Half Term: Monday 23 October to Friday 27 October 2017
  • Christmas Holiday:  Thursday 21 December 2017 to Tuesday 2 January 2018

Spring Term 2018

  • Wednesday 3 January 2018 to Thursday 29 March 2018
  • Half Term: Monday 12 February to Friday 16 February 2018
  • Easter Holiday Friday 30 March to Friday 13 April 2018

Summer Term 2018

  • Monday 16 April 2018 to Friday 20 July 2018
  • Half Term: Tuesday 29 May 2018 to Friday 1 June 2018

This  calendar gives a total of 195 days. A maximum of 5 staff development (INSET) days can be deducted by the School Governing Body to ensure that schools meet their statutory obligation to open for 190 pupil days.

Schools retain the option to vary the standard school year by closing to allow celebration of up to three religious festivals that occur on a weekday in term time after consulting with their local school communities. Provision must be made elsewhere in the school year to ensure that the school is open for the statutory number of days to pupils.

Parents are strongly advised to check with their child’s school before making any holiday arrangements or other commitments.
