Healthier Catering Commitment



Healthier Catering Commitment is a voluntary scheme for food businesses and outlets.

The aim is for is us to work together with local businesses to encourage healthier eating.

Businesses which apply are encouraged to take various small actions around reducing salt and sugar, healthier frying, increasing carbohydrates, promoting healthier options and improving access to fruit or vegetables.

The award is achieved once your business meets the scheme's eligibility criteria (see below). 

There are currently 28 London boroughs taking part in the scheme, which is backed by both the Mayor of London and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and delivered locally by us.

How your business can benefit

Caterers who successfully meet the criteria of the scheme will be listed on this website. We'll promote these business as part of our ongoing promotion of the scheme, aimed at increasing public awareness. We'll give you a certificate and window sticker to display on your premises and online.

Eligibility criteria

For your business to be eligible to use the HCC logo, it must:

  • meet eight criteria (four essential criteria, plus four others)
  • achieve the ‘broad compliance’ standard, or above, for food hygiene

If your business fries food, then it must meet a further three criteria.

Businesses can also sign up to other optional criteria.

In Waltham Forest:

  • almost 60 per cent of adults are estimated to be overweight or obese
  • 40 per cent of pupils aged 10-11 years are either overweight or obese, according to recent National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) results

We recognise the important and positive role that Waltham Forest’s businesses are already playing in tackling the issue through providing healthier food options.
