Cycling and walking to school

Waltham Forest Council is working towards enabling more children, teachers and parents to walk or cycle to school:

  • Developing safer and more convenient routes to school
  • Improving facilities within schools such as cycle parking.

Healthier children - active travel such as walking or cycling has physical health benefits such as as childhood obesity

Safer children - through looking at the ways that children travel to school and taking steps to improve their safety

Improved learning - active travel can improve children’s academic performance.  Improved concentration, learning and classroom behaviour

Traffic congestion and parking - vehicles on the 'school run' create serious traffic congestion and parking problems. Promoting alternatives can help ease this

Environment - fewer vehicles on the road means cleaner local air quality and reduced carbon emissions
