Apply for a personal licence to sell alcohol

The council grants personal licences to people who want to supply or authorise the supply of alcohol.

Should the holder of a valid personal licence move address or change their name, it is a requirement that the individual contacts the council that issued the personal licence to notify them of the change.

As soon as reasonably practicable, the individual must return their personal licence (both parts) along with the prescribed fee and details of the change.

Should any parts of the licence not be returned a valid reason is required, if the licence has been lost or stolen, this must be reported to the police and proof that it has been reported is required by the council.

Yes applicants for a personal licence will need to hold a licensing qualification which has been accredited by the Secretary of State. The aim of this provision is to ensure that licence holders are aware of licensing law and the wider social responsibilities attached to the sale of alcohol.

As of the 1st April 2015 the Government has removed the requirement for Personal Licence holders to renew their licence every ten years through the Deregulation Bill.

Personal Licenses that expire after this date will not require any action to be taken as the licence automatically continues.

Personal licence holders that would like to remove the expiry date from their licence have the option of making this request in writing to us and sending parts 1 and 2 of their original Personal Licence. There is a charge of £10.50 to cover administrative costs if you ask for a new licence to be issued to remove either the expiry date or to update the photograph on the licence.

For further guidance on the renewal of a personal licence, please visit the Home Office website.
