An A-Board is a type of signboard that is typically used for advertising or promotional purposes. It is usually made from wood, metal, or plastic and consists of two panels that are hinged together so they can be folded up for easy storage and transportation. The panels are often printed with the same design on both sides, allowing them to be seen from either direction.

Boards are a popular choice for businesses, as they are lightweight and easy to move around. They can be used both indoors and outdoors, making them ideal for use in busy areas such as shopping centres or high streets.

Permission to put up an A-board

You do not need permission to use an A-board within Waltham Forest, however there are strict conditions that apply to their use such as:

  • only one A-board will be allowed per premises.
  • where a business has its own private forecourt adjacent to the adopted highway, any A-board must be placed wholly within this forecourt.
  • A-boards must be placed at the back of the footway as near to the property as possible
  • A-boards must not be attached to street furniture, trees and other items contained within the highway (including pavements).
  • A-boards must be taken in at night or when the business is closed for the day.

Read the Council’s full A-board policy before using an A-board within the borough.

If A-boards are placed otherwise than in accordance with these conditions, the Council may issue a Fixed Penalty Notice and/or remove the A Board without notice.

Repeat offences may result in prosecution at Court with a maximum fine if convicted of up to £2500.
