Many enquiries that we receive relate to the booking of appointments, the purchase of certificates or our Nationality Checking Service. As a result of this we have compiled the responses to these general enquiries as a set of Frequently Asked Questions which we trust you will find helpful.
Appointments
Registration of births and deaths are currently only available by appointment.
You can also contact us to make an appointment for other ceremonies.
To make an appointment
Use our online Register Office e-bookings system to book appointments for:
- Registering a birth
- Registering a death
- Giving notice of marriage
- Giving notice of a Civil Partnership
Bookings for appointments on Saturdays can only be made by telephone or in person.
Please contact the Register Office by telephone, or visit us to make bookings for all ceremonies, or any other appointments.
Emergency contact details
If you require the services of the Superintendent Registrar in an emergency for a Registrar Generals Marriage Licence outside of office hours, please telephone Waltham Forest Direct on 020 8496 3000.
If you require the services of a Registrar to issue an authority to allow a burial to take place in an emergency (usually for Jewish or Muslim deaths), this service is available from the Register Office on a Saturday morning.
On a Sunday morning or Bank Holiday, the service is available ONLY between 9am-11am by telephoning Waltham Forest Direct on 020 8496 3000.

- Monday and Tuesday 9am-4pm
- Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 9am-12.30pm and 2-4pm
- First Wednesday of every month closed 9am-1pm
- Saturday and Sunday appointments only
