housebound readers service image

This is the part of the library service which caters to older people and people with disabilities.

It includes:

Home Delivery Service

This service visits people living in Waltham Forest at home once every four weeks with a selection of library material - novels, non-fiction, large print, standard print, music, talking books and material in community languages.

The Home Delivery Service is for people who are unable to get to a library on their own. This could be because of a disability, old age or an inability to carry heavy books.

To apply

Application forms are available to pick up from libraries or may be downloaded below. Complete the form with your name, address and telephone number and get it signed by a doctor, district nurse, home help or social worker to confirm that you are unable to get to your nearest library. When we get the form a member of staff will call you to discuss your requirements and set up delivery dates.

Home Delivery Service Library Clubs

In some areas we can provide accessible transport once a month to bring readers to a library. As well as a chance to make your own selection from the shelves, this provides an opportunity to join other readers for a cup of tea and a chat. The clubs meet for two hours in the afternoon and there is usually an activity such as a quiz, a video or a guest speaker.

Services for Blind and Partially Sighted People

Large print books together with talking books on cassettes and CDs are available at all libraries. The Home Delivery Service will also pay your annual subscription to the Royal National Institute for the Blind Talking Book Service and the National Library for the Blind Braille service. You can find out more about these services from their websites.
