The Mortuary handles deaths in the community that have been referred to the Coroner.

Walthamstow Public Mortuary is provided by the Council on behalf of the H M Coroner for the Eastern District of London. The Mortuary receives and cares for those who die within the Waltham Forest area.

  • To provide facilities for the receipt and storage of bodies under the jurisdiction of H M Coroner
  • Handle bodies with dignity and respect
  • To assist pathologists with post-mortems to determine the cause of death
  • To assist forensic pathologists with post-mortems in cases where criminal charges may arise
  • To provide information and advice about post-mortems and what to do following a death
  • Assist H M Coroner to deal quickly with cases for faith or cultural requirements
