How does the scheme work?

Members of the public can use the toilet facilities during the premise's opening hours and without any need to make a purchase.

Participating premises will display one of the following stickers in their window depending on the facilities offered:

When was the system launched?

It was launched in April 2007.

How many members are there?

There are 41 members of the scheme as at August 2009.

Who can join the scheme?

We are not currently recruiting new members to the scheme. However we are still open to expressions of interest as we may well be recruiting in the future.

What is the qualifying criteria?

Businesses are required to allow free access to their public toilets without the obligation to buy anything.

What do businesses get in return?

  • £800-£1000 per member
    This fee is dependant on the size and number of conveniences offered per organisation
  • Possibility of grants for disabled adaptations
  • Details published on the Council’s website with opening times, address/location plus details published on maps

What do businesses have to do?

Members will be asked to display stickers in their windows showing what facilities are available, ensure that their facilities are kept clean and easily accessible for the public throughout their opening times.

Where are the toilets located?

The toilets are located in town centres/central transport points and parks throughout out the borough.

What’s happening about the existing public toilets?

All of the old style public toilets have been closed down with the exception of Chingford Mount public toilet.

How often are the toilets inspected?
