Dark nights

The weather has an important effect on our safety. The end of British Summer Time on 26 October heralds the beginning of the most dangerous time of year on our roads. Generally, the most dangerous time is between 3pm and 6pm.

Cycling

  • Always wear an approved cycle helmet.
  • Wear high visibility clothing when out cycling especially as winter days can be very gloomy.
  • If cycling in the dark or in bad weather, make sure your bike has working lights.
  • Children should always be extra careful when going out on their bikes. It is advisable for parents to go out with their children to ensure they understand how to cycle safely.
  • Children over 9 should can take a cycle course
  • Courses will be running next year during the School summer holidays.
  • Try, where possible, to use cycle routes.

Walking

  • Always choose a well-lit place when you cross the road. Most pedestrian crossings have lights shining on them to help the drivers see you.
  • Remember it takes drivers longer to stop a vehicle in wet or slippery conditions.
  • Wear high visibility or light coloured clothing when out walking.
  • Use a pedestrian crossing whenever possible.
  • Always set a good example to young children, teach them the Green Cross Code
  • Always hold young children's hands when out walking.

In the car

  • Don't leave it too late to turn on your lights.  See and be seen.
  • Don’t drink and drive. There is often a temptation during the Christmas period to have one more drink! Also, remember if you have drunk a lot during an evening; you may still be over the limit the next morning
  • Always clear your windows of frost or ice before starting your journey.
  • Watch out for pedestrians, especially children. It may be difficult to see them because of low light levels. During school arrival and departure times there is usually a large number of children crossing the road or riding bikes.
  • Always drive at an appropriate speed, often this will be below the speed limit.
  • Never exceed the speed limit
  • Always make sure children are belted in and that child seats are fitted correctly. If you are unsure of how to get the best fit of a child seat, contact The Accident Prevention Unit on 020 8496 6185 to arrange a free check.

Motorcycling/scooter riding

  • Always wear hi visibility protective clothing, . helmet, gloves, boots, heavy jacket and thick trousers.
