The Highway Authority is responsible for vetting and approving all abnormal loads to be transported through the borough. In the case of the more extreme abnormal load requests, authorisation is required from central government in the form of a Traffic Order.

There are two abnormal load routes in the borough that accomodate:

  • Very long vehicle routes
  • High-load vehicles

Abnormal loads are:

  • Extremely heavy loads, consisting of a number of tractors and trailers etc. The haulier is required in this instance to apply to central government for transport approval; this takes the form of a Traffic Order issued to the Highway Authority.
  • Boat Transporters and other abnormal loads that are not normal vehicles, require the haulier to apply to the local authority for permission to transport the load through the borough.

In both cases the local authority (the highway authority) vets and approves the proposed route. The vetting and approving of the proposed route allows the authority to take into consideration road works, road / subway strengthening of sections of the route, the removal of bollards / traffic lights and checking the haulier's indemnities.
