Statement of intent on lesbian and gay equality in Waltham Forest

Equality for all (Stonewall Index)

Waltham Forest Council has broken into Britain’s top 100 employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) staff an independent survey has shown.

The Council has been ranked at 67 out of 240 of Britain’s top employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) staff in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index 2008, compared to 101 out of 200 in 2007.

The introduction of a number of initiatives helped the Council dramatically improve its score, including:

  • Introducing a LGBT Staff Network
  • Celebrating LGBT History Month with various events and raising the Rainbow flag symbolising diversity and inclusiveness
  • Celebrating International Day Against Homophobia
  • Working in partnership with community groups
  • Ensuring all HR polices offer equal rights for LGBT staff
  • A steering of LGBT staff with direct links to the senior board of the council
  • Developing an action plan of projects in 2008/09
