These are the council’s second set of gender equality scheme priorities for the period 2010 - 2013. They have been agreed by the council's Leadership Team and these together with a fully developed three year action plan will be presented to Cabinet for ratification soon after the elections. Our choice of priorities build on the successes of our first scheme and are based on the evidence we gathered on gender issues over the last few months as well as engagement work we undertook during February and March 2010.
In summary, our scheme focuses on the following five themes:
- Increase women’s safety on the streets and at home
- Increasing the choice and control women have in their lives
- Raising boys’ academic achievements
- Improving the quality of services from a gender perspective
- Promoting equality in Council workplaces
Gender Equality Scheme 2010-2013
Gender Equality Scheme 2010-2013 Action Plan
Following the introduction of the new Public Sector Equality Duty on 5 April 2011 there is no longer a requirement for the Council to produce Equality Schemes.
As a result the 2010 -2013 Gender Equality Scheme is on hold and the being reviewed in light of the new duties. A significant amount of the project work in the action is still continuing and the Council’s day to day work to meet the particular needs of vulnerable women is not affected.
A progress report about the delivery of this scheme and the Council’s other statutory schemes will be published by the end of April 2011.
To support the Council’s on-going commitment to gender equality and the strategic priorities we will develop and publish a new set of equality objectives by April 2012 in line with the Equality and Human Rights Commission guidance and the Government’s revised timetable.
