Disability Equality Scheme 2006-2009 (Easy Read) ( 778KB)

This is the Council’s first Disability Equality Scheme. It was developed with the involvement of 200 disabled people and local disability groups. They came from a range of different ethnic and other backgrounds and had a diversity of impairments and long-term medical conditions.

The most significant discussion and action-planning activity took place at the “Big Disability Conversation 2006”. This involved councillors, senior managers, disabled staff and residents receiving a presentation of the results of information gathering exercise, considering and agreeing priorities and working together to develop ideas for inclusion in the action plan.

In light of our joint discussion our priorities for the next three years are to enable disabled people to:

  • Get out and about
  • Get their voices heard and
  • Live independently
